Visiting the Capital of Christmas

Place Broglie and Strasbourg’s traditional Christkindelsmärik
You will be surrounded with Christmas ornaments everywhere : lights, santons, garlands, Christmas balls… On the Place de la Cathédrale, the setting is magical and the experience you will have will be unique. Its small wooden cabins are devoted to Alsatian craftsmanshift. The Rue des Maroquins is a must-see with its decorated facades all more beautiful than the next.

Taste Alsatian flavors
Don’t miss the market of Alsatian delicacies on the Place du Marché-au-Poissons and the terrace of the Palais Rohan. There you can try bredeles, gingerbread or Alsatian foie gras. And if you’re feeling thirsty, a little mulled wine will wake your taste buds up.
On the Place du Temple Neuf, be ready for more of Alsatian specialties : the famous truffle knacks, locally brewed beers, pastries and Alsatian whisky.

The alternative markets in la Petite France
A real postcard setting but a different kind of Christmas market. On Place Grimmeissen, the OFF market is here to offer an unexpected and quirky way to celebrate Christmas. There you will find ethical and solidarity-based stands to make your purchases.
A few streets away on the Place des Meuniers, small Alsatian producers will be waiting at their stands with their very own brandies, nougat, mushrooms, honey, compotes and more …

Nighttime wonders
At night, the city turns into a magical place full of lights.
Must-sees :
– the famous Carrée d’Or and its beautifully decorated narrow streets.
– the majestic Christmas tree on Place Kléber. It is surrounded by its own Christmas market devoted to 85 charities.

Tips

It can sometimes be difficult to find a parking space in Strasbourg at Christmas, so you might like to leave your car in the Château de l’Ile’s free secure car park and hop on a tram taking you directly to the city centre (from station “Ostwald Hôtel de Ville” 10 minute walk from the Château de l’Ile and 15 minute journey in the direction of “Hoenheim Gare”).
